survey result

Introduction
In Korea, many students go out for studying English or other courses like art, music. Almost students want to study second language in England and America cultures. The researcher decided to investigate (1) how many people want to go out abroad for development of ability of second language in the class and (2) Is the studying abroad really effective to get  a better job than studying only in Korea.

Method
In order to find out the students want to go out or not,  the researcher designed the yes/no question on the first page. If answers are Yes, it goes to next page that the survey asked where do you want to go for studying  and  It also includes what kind of studying they want in the other country and what is the interesting language. the researcher designed the 4 questions what kind of studying they want in the other country.
First, It included common question for seperate the opinion which choose the yes or no about going out. There are 9 questions survey for students who want to go out for studying and 3 questions for students who don’t want to go out. It was hypothesized that the students who study English education almost want to go out for studying the second language and most of students think that the studying abroad is good qualification of getting better job than not going out students. The survey was administered during one week and 10 students responded.

Correlation; Favorite and studying country
Five out of nine students who want to go out  answered the same country  that write the favorite country and the country which students want to go out for studying. However four students answered the different countries as the favorite countries; Korea, Australia, France and New zealand. In the result, all of students want to go English-speaking world like USA, UK, Canada for studying.

The reason of going out and second language.
Most of students want to study going out because of  the second language in the other country and all of the students answered the “interesting language” including English. Also, five people are interested in Spanish. It is the second interesting language in the class. Some of students like Japanese and French. It seems that the survey respondents  who are major in English education is the most important influence as the result about going out.

Period of going out for studying
66% of the students responded that the second language studying going out during more than 1 year is appropriate to them. It does not mean to master English. Also the minimal period which 33% of the students think about going out is 1 year.

necessity of language course
A number of students answered that the language course need to get the experience, basic skills, more systematic and effective education. The students seemed to need more preparation to learn English in the college and academies before adaptation of daily life in the English-speaking world. Just one student don’t need to get the language course but there are no reason about it so, it could not analyze.

Getting good  jobs by studying abroad
Just 7 students answered about this question; ‘Do you agree Korean students should study abroad for getting a better job?’ Contrary to the hypothesis, only four seventh of the students(approximately 57%) agreed that the studying abroad is more effective qualification of getting a good job. They referred the reasons why Korean company want more experience, spec(specification;Konglish), special people.

Conclusion
Overall, the survey revealed that most of students in the class want to go out for studying English and English-speaking world are most popular countries like USA, Canada, UK. In general, the students think more than one year for studying abroad is good to acquire the second language like a native English speaker in daily life.
Just some of the students agree that the studying abroad is of help to get a better job because of special experience and demand of Korean company.

Teaching Speaking

Based on the comments above, explain what problems each student has. Then, design a speaking task and explain why it will help solve Minsu’s and Homin’s problems.
Finally, suggest a solution which will address Sujin’s problems in terms of the washback effect of assessment. Use approximately 300 words (30 lines).

Each student has some typical problems in Korea. I think Minsu wants more free talking time in class like real life conversation. It is very rare that he hopes to use the practical expressions or words in English. Also, he tries to choose the dialogs and sentences for fluently speaking English. In other way, Homin concerned about mistakes when he speaks English. He wants more feedback from teacher for correcting the errors but, teacher doesn't care about his mistakes at all. It could be serious problem to speaking. Sujin has the low motivation about speaking English in class. This means that she doesn’t have any reason of speaking English and the course of study like some task or activity is not focus on speaking. It is just about grammar or reading for scholastic ability test so,this is the task to solve these students’ problem that i think about.

Before suggesting about the task, I want to emphasize that the teacher has a huge responsibility in class because Minsu and Homin want more interactions from teacher or  other students. For solving the problem in class, I want to do the role-play speaking task in class. here is the way of the role-play. First, the teacher provides the topic of the dialog and makes them a group not individually work. Then, students talk about the topic enough time to make a dialog, they can use any material like dictionary or youtube but, they should not make a dialog same. The role-play has the various characters in the dialog and students choose the character what they want. It is very independent task in group. The teacher goes around the classroom to check the processing situation. That is just the teacher’ role. After making dialog and practicing the play, they come out the classroom and assess the other group’s play. Finally, teacher gives feedback whole class not just individual students.

This task will help to Minsu and Homin because Minsu can make a own dialog what he want to say any situation and he will learn the real conversation expression in the dialog also, the group members help him and they can develop each other like jigsaw. In group, there are many different level students so, it is good interaction to each other. In the Homin’s case, he is very afraid of mistakes and it is obstacle to speak English so, the teacher makes him reduce the fear.  For reducing afraid,  the teacher gives  enough time to practice the sentence to him. It could be make him feel confident in front of the students. The second  way is when the teacher circulates the class, the teacher gives a implicit feedback so he can think about what his problem is.

I think Sujin has a big problem to speak, like the preceding. She doesn't have any reason to speak in class and it is not good to her. She can not understand to speak because the speaking assessment score and percentage of grade is very low. She regards that speaking is just grade at course of study English. In this case, the teacher should do something. I want to suggest that the assessment must change the method of  score.  The teacher makes her more active.  The teacher can use the performance evaluation that make youtube or group work for speaking English. It makes her get more motivation to do the test. Finally, the teacher makes percentage of grade of speaking high. It is good way to do the assessment.

poem 'To a Daughter Leaving Home'

I want the poem because it makes me creative something more than novel. Especially the poem ‘To a Daughter Leaving Home’ is the best poem to teach students, as I think until now. There are some nostalgic words in the poem like two round wheels. The two round wheels means a bicycle. Recently I rode a bicycle again, since graduate a high school.  Riding a bicycle is the childhood memory leastways to me. I want to teach the pure childhood even though the high school students are not old.

As referred to earlier, the first reason for teaching  this poem is that the poem theme is childhood memory in addition to reminding of their parent’s love. In the poem “When I taught you at eight to ride a bicycle, loping along beside you”  means that parents take care of their children before they protected themselves . This could be the time for thinking their parents’ love and thank them again. When I teach this poem, many students will be reminded of their attitude to mom and dad.

A second reason that I chose this poem is not hard to study. This means Korean students don’t like English poem as like me, so I have to choose the easy poem including word, metaphor, simile. Also, I think that the poem class have to be fun to study with whole class. This poem can have a lot of activities during class. For example, students can make a song or picture using this poem. It would motivate students to study English poetry.

In conclusion, I want to make an enjoyable class with English poem as a language play. The poem ‘To a Daughter Leaving Home’ is the great contents to learn with high school Ss. because they are sick of the English for university admission.  Especially, “the hair flapping behind you like a handkerchief waving goodbye.” this line describe the beautiful and sad independence for parents and children. It even looks the healthy family membership in these days.
